INTRODUCTION
All Smritis must uphold the spirit of Sruti. Manu's Manusmriti(MS) takes the foremost place among the Smritis, because his work is based on the teachings of the Veda. Manu's greatest contribution is his consideration of law as dharma, which etymologically means that which upholds or that which sustains. Dharma, the adherence to righteousness, is the very foundation of a just and sustainable society. Since humans have free will, they may choose not to adhere to dharma, and then, the society will start regressing. In upholding dharma, man evolves towards perfection, while in demeaning dharma, humanity sinks to a sordid destruction. Manu, the great Indian sage, who is considered as the oldest of the law makers in the annals of human civilization, has very beautifully given the essence of the Vedic Ethical values, anointed as the corner stone of the Indian philosophy:
Prityajedarthakamanu yau syatam dharma varjitau। Dharmacapyasukhhodarka lokavikrustameva ca।(Manu Samriti 4।176)
“Reject wealth/money and desires, which are contrary to Dharma। Reject also rules of such Dharma obedience to which lead to unhappiness of a few or which cause public resentment”(MS4।176)।
Itisprposedtocover, starting from the Source of Manu Samriti, various specific Vedic ethical values ( citing relevant veses of the MS) under various sub-heads like : ‘Knowledge of the Vedas’(over 15 verses), ‘Recitation of Om and Savtri’ (6 verses), on ‘Allurement to sensual Plesures(16 verses), ‘Respect to Elders’(5 verses), ‘Dietary Rules of Conduct’(6 verses), on ‘Gentle Speech’(7 verses), Code of Conduct and Ethical Values(15 verses), Code of Conduct, in general((45 verses), on Human Desires(over 10 verses), and Raja Dharma, etc
An article titled ‘A Glimpse of Vedic Ethical Values in Manu Samriti’ has been published in the reputed Vedic Science Journal, in its Vol.10,No.2(April- June, 2008 )issue recently. In this thought-provoking article an attempt has been made to bring together certain specific Vedic ethical values enshrined in the Manu Samriti(MS), which are still relevant in the modern times, faced with the onslaught of degradation of moral values on all fronts.
